How to Install a Lace Wig at Home: A Step-by-Step Guide

A beautifully installed lace wig looks like it's growing from your scalp. The good news: with a little patience and the right tools, you can get that salon finish at home. This guide walks you through every step, from prepping your natural hair to laying your edges.

What you'll need

  • Your lace wig
  • A wig cap that matches your skin tone
  • Lace adhesive or glue (or an elastic band for glueless installs)
  • Rubbing alcohol and cotton pads
  • Sharp scissors or a small razor
  • A wide-tooth comb and an edge brush
  • A hot comb or flat iron
  • A satin bonnet for aftercare

Our Lace Lay Kit brings the essentials together so you're not hunting for products mid-install.

Step 1: Prep your natural hair

Start with clean, dry hair. Braid it into flat cornrows or slick it into a low, flat bun so there are no lumps under the wig. Then pull on your wig cap and tuck in any loose strands. The flatter your base, the more natural your wig will sit.

Step 2: Clean your skin

Wipe along your hairline with rubbing alcohol on a cotton pad. This removes oil and makeup so adhesive grips properly and your install lasts longer. Let it dry fully.

Step 3: Position the wig

Place the wig on your head and line up the front of the lace just slightly in front of your natural hairline. Check that the ear tabs sit evenly on both sides. Take your time here, as correct placement is what makes the final look believable.

Step 4: Cut the lace

Fold the hair back out of the way and trim the excess lace along your hairline. Cut slowly and leave a very thin strip of lace, around 1 to 2 mm, in front of the hair. A slight zigzag cut helps the lace blend more naturally than a perfectly straight line. Cut small slits at the ears so the wig sits flat around them.

Tip: HD lace is ultra-thin and delicate, which is why it melts so well into the skin. Use sharp scissors and never pull on the lace while cutting.

Step 5: Secure the wig

With adhesive: Apply a thin layer along your hairline, let it turn tacky (usually a minute or two), then press the lace down firmly from the centre outwards. Add a second thin layer if you want a longer hold. Always patch test new adhesives on a small area of skin first.

Glueless: Use the adjustable straps and an elastic band to hold the wig snugly in place. Glueless styles like our Ocean Wave are perfect if you want a quick install or have sensitive skin.

Step 6: Melt the lace

Tie a scarf or elastic band firmly around your hairline and leave it for 10 to 15 minutes. This presses the lace into the adhesive and helps it disappear into your skin.

Step 7: Style and lay your edges

Remove the band and style your hair as you like. Use a hot comb to smooth the front and make the hairline lie flat. Finish with your edge brush for a soft, natural hairline. Always use a heat protectant and keep heat away from the lace itself.

Aftercare: make your install last

  • Sleep in a satin bonnet to reduce friction and frizz.
  • Avoid heavy oils near the hairline, as they loosen adhesive.
  • Remove the wig gently with an adhesive remover. Never pull lace off your skin.
  • Wash and condition your wig regularly to keep it soft and shiny.
